For the first time since 2019, the Montgomery County Housing Authority will open a lottery that is the first step in securing a housing voucher.
Applications will be accepted online and in-person between Nov. 15 and Nov. 21, according to a recent announcement from MCHA. The application does not guarantee a voucher, but is an opportunity to get on the wait list.
Formerly known as Section 8, the Housing Choice Voucher essentially caps the monthly rent someone pays for private or public housing at 30 percent of their income. The rest is subsidized by MCHA, thru the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
It should be noted that the lottery is not first-come, first-served. An application filed on or before Nov. 21 gives a person an equal chance to secure a spot on a waiting list of up to 1,000 people.
There is NO FEE for this application. Assistance is being offered in Norristown and Pottstown for those who need it. Details can be found on the full announcement from MCHA.
